In January 1942 we blew a tire in landing at Accra in Africa. After a week’s delay, two of our crew flew commercial back to Freetown, Sierra Leone, where another B-17 had crashed. They removed a good tire from the wreck and returned with it to Accra and we departed the next day. During the delay in Accra I read a novel about flying. The title page contained the seventh verse from Psalm 91. I immediately adopted this scripture as pertaining to me. I was on my way to combat and "it" was not going to happen to me. Thirty-four years later I became a Christian believer. I knew then that I was just not a survivor. I had needed, received and used a lot of help!
